The Dark
Our neighbor was afraid of the dark. She spent most of her life and all of her fortune trying to overcome this fear. She consulted doctors and psychologists. She hired professionals to lock her inside closets, blindfold her, and hold her hand in darkened rooms. Yet as soon as the light disappeared, her heart began to gallop, her hands trembled, and she could not breathe. In the dark, she was no longer sure if she existed. She did not know where she ended and the world began. Determined to overcome her fear, she spent long nights lying in her bed in a darkened room, wide awake and terrified, unable to sleep a wink. During the day she was exhausted and groggy, wandering aimlessly through the aisles of the grocery store and mumbling about her failure until someone took her hand and gently said, "Oh honey, just turn on a light."
Attempting to overcome our imperfections can leave us in a worse state than when we began. Accept your limitations and cultivate your talents.
