Drumming with Chad

So last month I signed up for a Legend of the 70s course on Drumeo featuring Chad Smith. Today all the classes dropped and I went over to show Jackson and watch him play along. Well....it was not what we had hoped for. The courses were more of a "workout" and the pacing wasn't as fast as the actual tracks. I think Jackson and I were thinking it would be the full song with maybe some practice beforehand. Oh well. We abandoned the courses and I wound up recording him play freestyle, which was way better. This kid, this kid is so freakin' good. 

Post Script: 

March 13th was the Live Q&A with CS and we made it three minutes before Jackson and I bailed. It was essentially the host in the Drumeo studio and then a Zoom call from Chad's phone whilst in a freakin' basement. The video quality for him was dreadful. I stupidly thought it would be both of them in the studio together. What a joke. I figured the host would ask questions rather than the public and that CS would do a bit of drumming to round out the Legends of the 70s course. Nope! It was shoddy as hell. I turned to Jax at minute three and said, "Wanna ditch this and hit Wawa for hoagies?" Hell to the yeah was his reply, and off we went. Frankly, it turned out to be a rad night with my fave teenager - we jammed to Sabbath, Queensrÿche, some Ani DiFranco, Sevendust, and Pumpkins, then grabbed some grub and stopped to see Mama/Nana Rose and pal, Ivy, before I dropped him at my in-laws. I even scored a hug from MeMom while Mannix played on the telly. Still, I'm mega-disappointed that the course and the Q&A were so blah. It felt like a cheap cash grab for his charity and I genuinely got zilch out of it. Oh well, time to move on!

(I mean this guy has more money than god but can't be bothered to set aside time to be properly filmed? And on something that isn't an iPod Touch from 2011? Horrendous.)

* The Last Bookshop in London ¹ by Madeline Martin - I'm pretty sure that Natalia recommended this to me a while back. It takes place during the second World War and was thoroughly engrossing. 

* The Clue of the Tapping Heels by Carolyn Keene - Terrible cover. This was a solid mystery that, like all the Nancy Drews I've read, was a nice escape from the grind of every day life.

* You Matter by Christian Robinson - I read this and the next bookvat the Delaware Art Museum when I went with Lucy. This was sweet and if I had a kid, this would be in their personal library.

** Parker Looks Up by Parker Curry & Jessica Curry - Adorable and important.

** The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey - Last year for Vincent Price Day I asked Ms. Price what her father's favourite book was and this was the title she gave me. I bought a paperback copy but knew I'd never get around to reading it. Thankfully I found a wonderful audiobook version that was slow to start but soon picked up. I had re-watched The Lost King just before I started this and Richard III was already heavy on my mind. I know I will without question be listening to this again. So good!

** The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare - I needed a light historical romance and this one was a great read. 

SEPTEMBER

** Gnome Is Where Your Heart Is by Casey Lyall - I bought this in Doylestown earlier this year and thought this was a sweet book. It's about a young girl named Lemon whose grandfather was visited by aliens when he was younger and how Lemon is the only one that really believes him. Grandpa has Alzheimer's and his granddaughter is determined, with the help of her two pals, Marlo and Rachel, to find proof that those garden gnome, green-faced aliens that Grandpa Walt talked about were 100% real. Oh it was so good!!

* Show Up and Vote by Ani DiFranco - Couldn't believe that I scored a signed copy (Ani, your signature is atrocious!) of this fabulous book. It's never too soon to teach kids about just how important voting is.

♥ A Super Scary Narwhalloween by Ben Clanton - Okay, okay, I should have been patient and waited to read this in October but I JUST COULDN'T!!! And clearly I will be re-reading it anyway since it's the cutest book series, possibly of all time.

♥ Narwhal - Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton - I know I read the most recent one first and am all over the place, but I finally got around to reading the book that started it all! Absolutely adorable in every way. Can't wait to collect each book in the series.

♥ The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk by Carolyn Keene - I first read this in October of 2019 and it really kicked off my love of the series. I had completely forgotten all but the fact that it took place on a ship, so it felt like I was reading it for the first time.

♥ James ¹ by Percival Everett - Bishop and I decided to form a little book club duo and this is our first book. I'll go into more later, but I absolutely loved it. Completely mesmerizing and Dominic Hoffman's narration was pure perfection.

Donald Glover came to mind because he's handsome, not afraid to be silly, is talented, likes music and seems fun and outgoing.

The infamous floaters moment all those years ago, playing on the driveway at the old house on Goodwin, dancing in your mother's lingerie to Cyndi Lauper, and any time we've met up to see classic movies on the big screen: Rocky, Jaws, White Christmas, and Road House.

I used to go to an Ani DiFranco concert whenever she was in the area but her fans get on my nerves. They'd yell at her stupid shit like "I love you, Ani!!" or shout the names of songs for her to sing. It was really disrespectful and I just stopped going. Then I got an email a month or so ago about her having a virtual concert for her newest album, Revolutionary Love. What? An Ani concert with NO obnoxious fans? Yes, please! I so hope that artists and comics continue to do virtual shows (after Corona drops dead) every once in a while for the people that can't get out or don't wanna deal with the crowds of a concert.

It was a solid show but I thought it was gonna be live instead of being obviously pre-recorded (in January of this year as the credits stated.) It felt like a documentary that was uploaded for us to view. Kinda a little lame and took a bit of the fun out of imagining it as a real-time live show but I'm still glad I attended, so to speak. Ani's hair is growing out from when she shaved it and it's very Laurie Anderson. She's gotten older and seeing the laugh lines around her mouth and eyes, the wrinkles on her neck, made me feel better about me getting and looking old. Ani has always been an easy person to look up to and seeing people my age look their age without shame makes my life a lil' easier. Oh and here's a little bonus - a postcard Ani got in Japan.

* I Think I'm Outta Here ¹ ² by Carroll O'Connor - I listened to this in March of last year and had this to say: Would have absolutely loved this to be unabridged but listening to Carroll O'Connor tell his memories of childhood, adulthood, fatherhood, and life as one of television's most memorable faces was just wonderful.

♥ Sense & Sensibility ¹ by Jane Austen - Rosamund Pike did a phenomenal job narrating and I wish she read all of Austen's books. At least there's still Pride and Prejudice which I plan on reading/listening to in the next month or so.

More Than Love ¹ by Natasha Gregson Wagner - I wish that this book told more stories about the family and Natalie's life. Lots of great stuff, just wanted more from before Natalie Wood's passing.

* No Walls and the Recurring Dream ¹ by Ani DiFranco - It was so great to listen to Ani tell her life story but it left me wanting more!! Hoping this is volume one of many more to come!
