May 2021 Books

How Y'all Doing? ¹ by Leslie Jordan
Siddhartha ¹ by Hermann Hesse - Clearly I listened to this because of Derek Jacobi. It was sorta interesting but I really couldn't get into it. I am so NOT an intellectual.

Tab Hunter: Confidential by Tab Hunter - I bought this book when it first came out, back when all I knew of Tab Hunter was his role in Battle Cry. (Although I only had eyes for Aldo Ray when I was a kid, rather than Tab.) Finally after years had gone by and I'd seen a few more of his films and especially the documentary on his life, I added his memoir to my list of books that I had to read in 2021. It was a fast read and made me love this fella all the more. A devoted friend, son, and brother, a damn hard worker, and according to Linda Darnell, a nice kisser. Definitely one I'll pick up again.

The Girl With The Curious Hair ¹ by David Foster Wallace - This was my least favourite of anything I'd read by DFW. The only one out of the ten short stories I genuinely liked was Little Expressionless Animals.

Let Love Rule ¹ by Lenny Kravitz - His childhood in New York was fascinating but once he moved to California it all went downhill. It just became unbearable. A high school age Lenny who was apparently so enlightened that he could intuit the inner turmoil of a fourteen year old prostitute he befriended and hid in his bedroom? He tried to seem wise and a feminist then says "chasing pussy" - ugh. Oh and all the religious stuff and mispronouncing the word incomparable. It held such promise but in the end I couldn't wait for him to just shut up.

♥ Hank Zipzer: Niagara Falls, or Does It? ¹ by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver - I first read/listened to this book back in May of 2019 and it was such fun to hear it all over again. I sincerely wish that the Wink read every one of his books because he is the perfect narrator to bring his stories to life.
* Clue Jr.: The Case of the Secret Message by Parker C. Hinter - This was one of the books I picked up at Baldwin's for Jackson (and me). Jax read it first and said it was okay. And it was cute, just a few stories that circle around child versions of the Clue characters and mini mysteries to solve.

I Got a 'D' in Salami ¹ by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver

¹ - audiobook
² - abridged version
* - liked
♥ - loved
Any unmarked titles were, in my opinion, so-so.

21 - The Sunset

The Sunset

These are days of glorious sunsets. We've never seen anything like them. Spectacular scenes with big budget effects, intricate patterns with every possible color (and some we've never imagined), and a center so bright that it is impossible to photograph. We're reminded that the sun really is a fireball in the sky and every evening we gather in the park to watch, hoping to commit these beautiful scenes to memory. "Someday I will paint one of these sunsets," says a man who wants to be an artist. "That would be wonderful," we tell him. But he only talks about his plans and never picks up a paintbrush. A few days later there's a change in the air, a shift in the light, and our special sunsets return to normal. They're lost forever and we've forgotten what they looked like. It would have been nice to have a painting so we could remember them.

Action must be taken before the opportunity is lost. Bad habits can cloud judgment. Contemplate the things which bring you joy and use your energy to bring this to others.

(I've been feeling very stuck for a long time in my life and unsettled since the death of Renee, even though I knew it was coming. I really didn't think I'd feel this sad. I picked this one to post because of the "sunset" to her life and typing out and really reading what it says is like a horoscope telling me to not waste away, but to get out there and leave my mark.)

Moving to Youngstown, Ohio

Lately every place I adore on Cheap Old Houses' Instagram account is in Ohio. This one has me daydreaming of all the improvements and upgrades I could make, were I living my perfect life. Clearly starting with contacting a lawn service then fixing up the siding and roof, yank down those awful shutters and replace them with ones that could actually function. Decorative shutters on a home are as tragic as the illusion of a pocket on a jacket. Oh and while we're at it, let's fix those garage doors.

Next up is this entry way. Let's restore those steps, fix up that fab checkered floor, tear down the wallpaper, get rid of that tacky white plastic thing, since it's a complete eyesore, and brighten up the place with fresh paint.

Love the wallpaper here and I could so see making this a reading room since it's so bright and cheery. That brown chair needs to be reupholstered, though.

Donate the sofa and recliner, get that wingback loveseat professionally cleaned, paint them walls somethin' purty, and deep clean that carpet, cause I kind of love the colour.

Get rid of the lace curtains, clean everything and leave it as is. The wallpaper looks perfect here.

Replace the hideous light fixture with something classic and chic, swap out the floor with lovely tiles, change the ketchup and mustard walls to coffee and cream with Nana Irma's brown and cream checkered wallpaper above the doorways and windows. Get rid of that entire sink area and put in something befitting of a farmhouse.

Put a fixture over that sad little lightbulb and leave that paper alone!

Saturday Silliness with Lauryn

For the first time this year I met up with Lauryn for lunch. The first time I was out to eat somewhere since Corona came to town. I picked her up and we went to one of our fave spots in Cwood then drove around for three hours hitting as many Dollar Tree shops as possible. Lauryn is getting married in September and she found the ideal vase for the centerpieces, but she needs eight more. We came up empty at every single one. But it was great to get caught up on all things Lauryn and to see the pix of her wedding dress as well as the bridesmaids gowns which are all beautiful. Her big day is gonna be a blast, with fab music and she asked that the caterers make sure to include vegan grub for me and the other veggies in her life. How sweet is that? Here are the obligatory selfies from today.

Documentary Wish

When in the hell is someone gonna make a documentary on Phil Donahue? This man accomplished so much and I would love for some filmmaker out there to sit down with the man himself and delve in to who he is and what his thoughts are on anything and everything.

Jaeden Eats Corn

She's at it again with another pointless video. Good Lord... Yes I am and this time I found one of a young Jaeden nibblin' on a corn cob, smirking and looking cute as can be. And there's a bit of MomMom/Mrs. Wilhelm in the background!

Renee Cortez

Former co-worker and pen pal bestie, Renee, finally passed away after more than a year of illness. True to her word, she promised that her mother would let me know when she died and yesterday evening I found what is now my last note from her, mailed on the 17th.

That's the one and only photo I have of Renee and it's been tacked up on my bulletin board ever since I got it. Renee was a kooky and kind soul with loads of silly creativity and a devotion to Mormonism. My mailbox will be a much more gloomy place to check, now that it will never have one of her colourful letters covered with stickers.

Renee Cortez, age 38, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Renee was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed going to church to serve the Lord and spending time with her family and friends. Renee was a loving daughter, granddaughter and a friend to many. She never met a stranger and she was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Renee will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The Music Man

Ya know what's wonderful about having a BFF with no kids and extra cash? She's totes onboard to spend over two hundred bucks on a ticket to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway in 2022. Am I lucky or what?!

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

In going through my first mini-movies on my old Canon Elph I found this video of Marina singing the title theme for the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham on January 9th, 2009. This gal hasn't aged a day and her laugh at the end is priceless!

(I fully realise that NO ONE is interested in seeing this snippet from many years ago but I stinkin' love it.)

The Graduates!

Hard to believe that my godchildren, Terri's kids, have graduated from 8th grade and will start high school in the Fall! It's a shame that I'm not closer with them and that I wasn't around them very much in their childhood. Terri's life is chaotically busy and has been since the kids were born. Shane and Juliette are both super polite and the moments I have had with them it's easy to see that they are just terrific people. Looking forward to seeing who they become!

At The Car Wash

I drove past a car wash today and was reminded of this rather boring video that I took of me and Ash back in Summer 2010. I was hooked on filming people who were usually not terribly into being filmed. But Ashlee was a good sport and even though this is a super dull clip where nothing remotely exciting happens, I still love it.

Road Games

I first saw this movie back in January 2010 and instantly loved it. Stacy Keach is a favourite of mine and Road Games is just plain fun with suspense, set in Australia, and the added bonus of Jamie Lee Curtis. After this episode of Family Ties is over I'm putting my copy of RG in the DVD player and settling in for a great flick. I can't wait! It's so good...

In Treatment

It was hard to miss the ads for the latest reboot/season 4 of In Treatment. I'm halfway through the series and am loving every session. I really like that therapist Dr. Brooke Taylor is such a different role for the luminous Uzo Aduba. Having only seen her in Orange is the New Black as Suzanne AKA Crazy Eyes, it made me so happy to see her playing a character so opposite from Suzanne, and she nails the performance. I'm anxious to find more of her work and looking forward to what will come for this actress.

Feeling Better Already!

The girls felt well enough to head out back and play on the swingset. The last photo of Bailey is stunning. I am definitely printing out a 5X7 and framing it. Oh and in the third shot you can see Sean's wearing the BlueQ socks I gave him on Saturday!

Dreaming of a Home in the Cotswolds

I've been going through every episode of As Time Goes By again and coming across this photo on IG made me nearly swoon. Oh to live in England in a lovely home like this with a courtyard, surrounded by stunning countryside would be so wonderful...

A Fabulous Day

I tend to feel the need to document any outing and take endless selfies in the hopes that one day it will trigger a memory of the day it was taken. Today I was so busy living and making the memory that I completely forgot to take any photos. It all started off with my waking up at 10ish all on my own, without an alarm to rouse me. I had dreamt that I was at Belgrade, at my grandmother's old rowhome, with my mother and, inexplicably, Matthias Schoenaerts, and I think Xavier popped in and out. Matthias was very stand-offish and sulked in a corner chair. Eventually we went out to the car to head home and every time I looked at a parked car it morphed into an old 1940s car. Anyway, once I was fully awake I became instantly excited because I remembered that the weather report for today was in the mid-70s and it would actually be nice out. Hurrah! I made two-oranges-three-apples juice and watched episodes of Columbo from season two, while on a winning streak with my Homescapes game. I even got a new character to name - a yellow lab that I called Lionel. Then it was a lunch of steak fries with vegan mayo. Absolute yum!

After a nice soak in the tub, I headed over to the library to pick up Family Ties seasons three and four plus Columbo season five and Dead Poets Society. I love the drive across two towns to reach the library, through the rich neighbourhood with the mansions and classy homes, especially those two cute ones with slate rooves. Roark's windows were down and I was daydreaming while listening to my latest playlist.

From the library I drove down to Delaware to COVID Central. Ashlee, Sean, and the girls all caught a - thank Christ - mild case of Corona and are on an official quarantine for at least two weeks. Ash said that they went food shopping not long before they got sick and didn't need anything, but I went over anyway to drop off some treats to keep them going. Sean unlocked the front door and everyone masked up (myself included, of course, even though I'm fully vaxed) and stayed clear on the other side of the room. Like a wacky Santa with her Trader Joe's sack of goodies, I pulled out six pairs of BlueQ socks for Sean (the pair I gave him in May was a huge hit and he said they were his favourite socks ever - I couldn't resist spoiling him with more), Cheetah Chomps cereal, Birthday Cake crunchy cookies, organic raisins (Bailey said, "these aren't my favourite raisins..." which her mother instantly scolded her for saying and told her to be polite and say thank you. Bailey then explained that she likes the ones that are chocolate best. Oh my gosh, how cute is she??!), and Magical Animal Crackers, all gluten free, for the wee ladies, plus a sheet of blank sticker boxes to fill in with drawings, and Crayola colouring pages. I also gave them my copy of A Light in the Attic so that Ashlee could lull the girls to sleep with a fun bedtime rhyme from Shel Silverstein. Finally Ashlee said I could open their bedroom door to let Farley and Bonnie out. I gave them each treats and they were both so good and didn't bark or jump on me at all. Progress! Hugs and kisses from afar and then I was out the door to head home.

A nagging feeling told me to pull in to the Discount Cigarettes shop just before my turn-off to the bridge back to Jersey. I went in and the girl, all of maybe 18, behind the counter (Nicola Coughlin would play her in the movie of my life) called me "hon" (how Baltimore is that!) and made me feel about five. But in a good way. I asked her if they happened to have any Nat Sherman cigarettes and she stared straight ahead, eyes bulging out and her jaw dropping while her lips were closed in that "oh crap, do we??" way. I said I was specifically on the lookout for Black & Gold, as they've been discontinued. She, sweet as can be, went in the back storeroom and reappeared with a cube of FIVE packs!! Forty some bucks (so cheap!) and I all but skipped out the door saying "yay!!!" on my way out, causing Nicola to chuckle and say "be safe, hon."

Filled with a zing when I saw that the line of traffic I'd seen in the opposite side of the bridge on my way into Delaware was gone on my return journey to NJ, I felt like celebrating and continuing this day of awesomeness. It was 5:45...would Xavier be home from work yet? Probably not...but let's try! I called and booyah! He was home and said I could stop over. We sat in the garage, chatting and smoking and watched the first two episodes of Warren. I gave Jackson a copy of The Hobbit I had laying around (Summer is for reading, after all!) and even saw Zach on his way to the gym in his "new" car. (It's Mary's old Toyota that's been their extra car until Zach got his license.) Then Mary finished her nine hour day of working overtime and joined us. Not long after came a wonderful surprise - Lisa stopped by! I hadn't seen her since September and it was so nice to get a great big hug and catch up with her for a bit. As I was heading home at 8PM and giving goodbye hugs, I scored a fistful of the best damn dark chocolate covered pretzels I've ever had in my life. (Mary got them at the Amish Market yesterday.) They lasted until the first stop light after pulling out of their driveway.

I got home, avoiding all traffic, and whipped up a big skillet of seitan and veggies for dinner followed by an oatmeal chocolate chunk cookie while watching Dead Poet's Society, which was very good. I like that the boys all genuinely cared about not only doing well, but helping eachother do well in their classes and more importantly in their lives. They were supportive and caring in a way that isn't often portrayed in films about young men. Then it was back to some more Columbo and maybe I'll turn in around 1:30 or 2AM.

Today was nothing special and rather hum-drum, but everything went my way and I couldn't help but feel grateful. Even the screeching headache I've had for the last few hours can't bring me down. I saw eight of my favourite people on planet earth, rubba-rubba'd two puppers' sweet faces, got multiple hugs, scored more of the second best cigarettes created, and heard my baby brother tell his wife that Warren is "fuckin' hilarious" - and I was scared that he wouldn't like it as much as I do! A fab day from start to finish.

The Wreckage of My Presence

Bishop texted me yesterday with, "Are you reading Casey Wilson's book?" Um...no. I had no clue that one of our favourite ladies of comedy wrote a book. I immediately hoofed it on over to Audible and saw that it was a collection of essays and Casey narrates. Her-lo? Like, yeah, I'm toad-ally gonna buy the audiobook and hit play. I spent my whole day at work today listening, laughing, tearing up, and feeling so good to have listened to a fantastic book after a couple disappointments in a row. Casey isn't for everyone, but I love her zaniness and it made for a wonderful Friday. Or should I say, Fri-yay. Uh, huh, yeah, I took it there. (Okay, that's the end of my Casey Wilson impression.)

In May of 2017 Kayla and I went to Charm City and discovered the Visionary Arts Museum and I came to love the paintings of Matt Sesow. Here are my faves from that day.

Our Knights

When Kayla and I stayed at Wing's Castle, the Annex Suite came with a suit of armour. Aptly named Wilhelm, which also happens to be a family name. Then late last month while in Jim Thorpe we met another knight in shiny armour. They are our good luck charms, it seems!

Weekend of Relaxation

I'm on day six of feeling sick for the first time since January of 2020 and decided to take it easy this weekend in the hopes of being 100% by Monday morning. I canceled all plans then managed to drag my backside out the door on Saturday to pick up fruit and veggies and hit the library a few towns away for my holds. Then it was home to watch As Time Goes By, Columbo, and season one of MacGyver for today. I was worried that MacGyver wouldn't be as fun as I remembered. It was a family favourite in the 80s, especially with big brother Dave, but by the end of disc one I was switching back to more of As Time Goes By. The episodes were good, however, in three of the four eps I saw, MacGyver was very much the white saviour. I think I'll see if the library has season three and skip ahead a bit. I've a feeling that later episodes might be more my speed. It was fun reminiscing a bit with Mum and Dave about the show.
