July 2022 Books

Another Country ¹ by James Baldwin - I read this because it's Bishop's favourite book. He warned me, saying, "I love that book. It's a tough one. It was just a very raw and emotional novel. Plus Baldwin revealed a lot of truths about how people are. Just remember there aren't a lot of likable characters in Another Country. So you will have to put it down and let it settle." It was beautifully written and Dion Graham's narration was flawless, but Bish was right, there are really no redeeming characters and it was a difficult book to read/hear based on that.

* Hurry Down Sunshine ¹ by Michael Greenberg - This book was recommended to me by Maria Bamford. All I knew was that it was a memoir of a parent's experience with their child's mental illness. Author Michael Greenberg was an excellent narrator and I so admired the family's determination to help Sally overcome some truly dark moments in her young life and react with true affection.

* Left on Tenth ¹ by Delia Ephron - Autumn and I like to discuss books in our letters to one another. She usually closes her letter with a list of the handful of books she's juggling. This was one of them. It was excellent, full of humour and heartbreak and rebirth.

* Born Standing Up ¹ by Steve Martin - I like Steve Martin the actor but I don't find his stand up to be funny at all. I think I chose to listen to this because it kept being recommended to me and because Steve narrates it. I thoroughly enjoyed the bits about his younger self and his rise to fame. Definitely worth a listen.

Here's Hank: How to Hug an Elephant ¹ by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver

Here's Hank: Robot on the Loose ¹ by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver

¹ - audiobook
² - abridged version
* - liked
♥ - loved
Any unmarked titles were, in my opinion, so-so.

Lamb

Another film that was recommended to me by Uncle Al, Lamb was absolutely engrossing. I had seen the trailer in the theatre last year and thought it looked interesting but never followed up on it. Finally I scored a subscription to Showtime and watched it. Noomi Rapace is one of the greats and this film really showcased her talents. I'm so glad that I did zero research and was therefore able to experience everything as it unfolded. A slow burn that was beautifully done.

Hoiladay Things & Stamps

I've had this shoebox since I was a kid, when new ballet flats cost only sixteen bucks. (All shoes should come in boxes this fun and cheery!) It's one of three that hold random items, mostly from childhood, that I don't need but cannot part with, and frankly, why should I?

Stickers for putting your name and address (I use these in the front cover of my sticker books), The Black Apple embroidery sheet that I think I ordered from the old Renegade Handmade, the info for the phony sterling silver nose ring that I bought and wore my senior year of high school, stack of random cards - the Style Police one was purchased at the local mall at Spencer Gifts!, the Lisa's Room plaque that hung in my childhood room, & name tags from various jobs.

Unicorn suncatcher from Aunt Berne, toucan wind up toy, and promotional matches from The Bogmen's fantastic album Life Begins at 40 Million.

Fish comb from the Jersey shore in possibly Summer 1980, Little Twin Stars comb, Dad's Zippo lighter, butterfly lighter that I think Terri gave me, clay-ish putty-type tree that I made, bracelets, Dad's Odies, Evita Pin, Morrison's cigarette lighter.

Two Madonna buttons, childhood velcro bracelet with star and heart happy faces, Causing a Commotion (my first cassette single!), Dad's ABC Century Club patch, and my Rebel Girls patch from a couple years ago.

Old jewelry box that holds the gold Snoopy pendant from Tish in 1985 that had my name engraved on his ear, Snoopy notepad, my favourite Snoopy and Woodstock toothbrush that was so cute I never used it and saved it in the plastic case.

Odie, clear photo older sleeves for wallets, Melanie's grade school photo, Christmas bulb light with 9-Volt connector and spare bulb, Garbage Pail Kids cards, SpongeBob Squarepants shrinky-dink that hasn't been baked, SpongeBob tin, Hello Kitty Devil tin, Hello Kitty pilot tin, two mini cassettes from my old late 90s answering machine, leather jacket keychain from Amy, Mickey Mouse high top sneaker key chain, Brooks Robinson autographed baseball card.

Cabbage Patch Doll birth certificates for Lorne Paddy and Rosemarie Felice, pink paper clip, lil' erasers for Halloween plus a heart with an arrow and a sweet snowman, plastic box from Disney World (I'm guessing from the 1990 trip), arrowheads, a worn out pendant that read How Beautiful Life Is When You Are In The World, Hello Kitty angel mini ornament, Strawberry Shortcake's kitty, Custard, as a suncatcher, the tag from the Israeli Troll Doll I used to have.

Stars and heart thingies (are they to make a chain to wear as a necklace if you get enough? Who knows...), Swiss cheese eraser for pencil top, Snoopy and Spike erasers, black cat from my childhood dollhouse, a mini porcelain mime/clown clip from Godmommy Gina, rollerskate charm, Porsche 928 Micro Machine, pink bracelet, sparkly purple hair tie from grade school, gold dangly earrings that belonged to Wayne's lovely mother, Nancy.

My favourite ten year old wanted to get in on the photo shoot.

An adorable little notebook featuring the coolest and cutest cartoon character of all time. Inside I wrote, in I'm guessing 1984, nice things about various family members.

Bracelet that Danny made for me back when I worked at the Hellmouth.

The hemp bracelet that Russ made for me in the last year I was at the Hellmouth
ps - I am very much aware that my photos are SO not professional and if I invested in an expensive camera and got into how to light things that my blog would look way better. The thing is, this blog is mostly for me and posts like this are 100% to have a record of silly possessions. It's the subject that matters most to me, rather than the lack of perfection in capturing them.

An Afternoon at Emily's

Today for the first time since October 2021 Emily and I finally got together! We sat in the kitchen, ate guac with tortilla chips, and pink lady apples. We talked about neuropathy, autism, thirst, the new Game of Thrones show, the sinking of the Essex, family, and how we are both excited for Fall and then Christmas. Emily is so easy to be with and we both hope we can get to see eachother again soon.

Julia

Sarah Lancashire is unstoppable - is there no role that she can take on and make her own? Her performance as Julia Child is spectacular and completely effortless. I forget that I'm watching someone act. I'm totally absorbed by her every movement. A stunning achievement.

Two of My Favourites

To celebrate Jaeden's 21st birthday (I can hardly believe that!) Kay and her adoring and wonderful boyfriend, Kenny, flew down to Florida for a handful of days, renting a lovely Airbnb, complete with its own swimmy pool, for them all to crash at and reconnect. It's really hard not having Jaeden just across the bridge and I so miss being able to fire off a text and ask him to hang out for lunch. We used to love to grab pizza together and while I'm happy that he's enjoying life in the Sunshine State, he's left the Delaware Valley a truly gloomy place without him around. Today, their last day together, Kay texted me this selfie. I love that Jaeden is pulling a silly face and not posing with a smile. It's so something I do and I find it very endearing. What a wonderful man he's grown up to be.

Dream Home

I spotted this over on Aestate (which I love and need to visit much more often) and it has me drifting off to sleep dreaming of it being all mine. Oh to own a single house with no neighbours but the wind, the sea, and the birds that fly overhead. Now that is paradise.

Haddonfield with the Gals

Today, for the first time since November of last year, me, Lauryn, and Mel all met up for lunch and some much needed chit-chat. Afterwards we posed for selfies with the Hadrosaurus then spent some time in Inkwood Books. We are already looking to make this a more regular thing and set up a date for October.
