Grounds for Sculpture II

Here are some pix from the Water Garden at Grounds for Sculpture. Marina and I are already planning our own outing on the 11th. She is going to fall in love with this place.

Anthony Caro - Potpourri 1976-77

Kiki Smith - Untitled 2006
Autin Wright - Free Form III 1998
G. Frederick Morante - Relative 2003

J. Seward Johnson, Jr. - King Lear 1982

Grounds for Sculpture I

This afternoon I was able to go to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton with my mum and our dear friend Terri. It was hotter than the surface of the sun outside, but we managed to hang in there and see a decent amount of sculptures. The primary goal for the day, though, was to see the Keith Haring exhibit, since he is my all-time favourite artist. (More on that portion of the trip in future posts.) For now, I'd like to share some photos I took of some of the pieces that spoke loudest to me.

Ekaterina Harrison - Mirage 1996

Martha Pettigrew - Gossip 2001

Alexander Liberman - Entwined III 1987

Leonda Finke - Seated Figure from Women in the Sun 1988

George Segal - Depression Bread Line 1999

The Last Goodbye

My brother Wayne is moving out of Hawkins this weekend so tonight was the last night he would be there to hang out. Marina and I rushed over after work and had a fabulously relaxing evening. We had beer, martinis (well, i'm the square in the family, so i just had ginger ale) and garlic knots, calzone, pizza, and delicious brownies.
We were trying to decide on a flick to watch when Marina admitted that she'd never seen Brian De Palma's Scarface. This is the girl who speaks fluent Spanish, has traveled to nine different Spanish speaking countries and is obsessed with the culture. But, in a good way. We were all stunned and declared that we would have to watch it. Clearly she loved it. As Xavier said, "Marine, it's a rags to riches tale."
The air was filled with a slew of somewhat atrocious Tony Montana impressions and lots of loud raucous laughter. It was one of those perfect nights that you wish could last so much longer.

More of Karen's Home

On Monday I was visiting with Karen and snapped some photos of her downstairs bathroom. Every room in her home is exquisite and tasteful. See for yourself:

Aunt Ginni's Old House

Last week I was sifting through a dusty shoebox and came across a handful of old polaroids that my cousin Hope took. Considering that Hope was about twelve when she took these photographs, I am incredibly impressed. They are completely gorgeous. Just thought I'd share them with you, dear reader. Have a beautiful day!

Drive Thru Car Wash

Ah...going through the automatic car wash. It was the highlight of this past weekend for both myself and my sixteen year old niece. If I recall correctly, this photo was taken during the Spot Free Rinse cycle. Little Truman is squeaky clean and looking his best.

First Crush

From the moment I saw Joe Strummer in the video for Rock the Casbah I was infatuated. Even at eight years of age I had superb taste in men. It was all about his mohawk. It was the 80s and I thought it was the coolest hairstyle ever. Took me til 2003 to finally rock out in my own hot pink mohawk.

Get Yer Yoga On

Not long ago Marina and I stumbled into a charming yoga studio just off the main drag in Merchantville called Manifest Health. The owner, Brigid Brennan, is a vivacious gal who created a beautiful space to meditate and lead the community into life changing good health. Marina & I had an opportunity to speak with Melissa, one of the yoga teachers, and found her to be intelligent, informative, and kind. She exuded such a fun, positive energy that I just knew she'd be a fabulous yoga instructor. And I was absolutely correct. If you live near Merchantville, swing by Manifest Health on your way back from Aunt Charlotte's.

(they also have hula hooping classes that i am dying to try out!!!)

Photo Op

I have an affinity for doorways and while walking through Collingswood the other morning I snapped this one of the Baptist Church on Frazier.

August Nights

Spent last night in Melissa's backyard from eleven o'clock until two thirty. It was a gorgeous summer night and we talked about Wayne Dyer, family, relationships and their elusiveness, ex-boyfriends, friends, yoga, and walking the right path. The night air was cool and filled with our laughter and soft plumes of cigarette smoke. It was a fantastic evening.

Maya Angelou

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

Kris Kristofferson

As a little girl, I remember sitting beside the Hi-Fi, looking at my mother's albums and being captivated by the cover photograph of Barbra Streisand's A Star Is Born. It's so beautiful and intimate that I always felt the need to glance over my shoulder to make sure that no one saw me staring at the gorgeous naked couple in the picture. Streisand's hair is wild and fabulous and Kristofferson is so clearly enamored of her.

Many years later my appreciation for Kris Kristofferson grew. I saw him in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and watching him grinning in the diner, driving that old pick-up, and mending the fence in the breeze just makes my toes curl and my heart beat faster. And the thing is, he is so much more than just a handsome fella; Rhodes scholar, singer, songwriter, actor, former helicopter pilot and Army Captain, just to name a few. Accomplished, brilliant, and still as handsome as ever...

Edie Falco

This woman is just lovely. Her bone structure is gorgeous. I've admired her since she starred as Brendan Sexton III's mother in Hurricane Streets back in '97 and I've never been disappointed in her work since. She's awesome.

The English Patient

Watching this film I always sit in stillness while the credits scroll past and wonder to myself if such a passionate, deep love like the one depicted exists outside of storybooks, film, and one's daydreams.

Wishing for...

Winter. The snow, the hot cocoa, the holiday lights on houses by the lake, and of course my heater breaking again and thus forcing me to huddle beneath a mountain of Tweety Bird, unicorn and Mom-made quilts and blankets. Not to mention that I get to rock out in my fab pink cheetah faux fur coat. I'm so done with these insanely hot Jersey summer days.
(and no bugs! no more spiders or flies or anything else to scare the crap out of me at 2am when i turn on the bathroom light.)

Ah, board games...

I spent many a Saturday afternoon in my childhood playing Gambler and Clue with my brothers and cousins. And Sorry! was always the go-to game in our neighbourhood when the weather was inclement and we all had to retreat indoors. Cranium is the new fave among my adult pals, but whenever the kids come to visit, it always warms my heart when they say, "Can we play Gambler?? Pleeeease..." The answer is always yes.

Name Your Band

At my old job I would pose a new question each day and send it 'round through Sametime/Instant Messenger. One of them was What name would you give to a band that you formed and what type of music would you play? Lauryn had a great name for a Jam Band - Cutthroat Chickens, while Josh's country band, Tomorrow's Promise was equally original. Oh, and Patty had just split up with her boyfriend, so she chose Paul is a Loser for her alternative band. I think mine was the best: The Huntington Frauds. Oh, and we played kick ass jazz.
