Looking back through old photographs, I stumbled upon three that my mother took of my brothers and me helping to clear out the front steps and driveway. It totally made me wish for lots and lots of snow...
The one of Dave is great because he's caught off guard and the one of me is hilarious because I look as though I were preparing for the hunt in that hideous orange suit. But the photo of little Xavier is absolutely perfect. He is so damn cute it shouldn't be legal.

Joanna, Chateau Marmont
Last month I spoke of the first of only two female portraits from Volume 1 of Scott Caan's collection of photographs that I actually liked. That was Jamie's Back, this is Joanna, Chateau Marmont and it's gorgeous. I love the lighting, the gold wedding band on a hand with short nails that remain naked and unpainted. Her dark hair in the shadow with heavy bangs that hide her eyebrows and her sad, tearful eye that immediately draws you in. Is it just me that thinks this is a sad photo? Am I reading too deeply into it? Maybe she's merely sleepy or lost in thought, but I believe she's a heartbroken girl in a desperate hotel. Caan has created a stunning picture.

Goals and Plans Over Dinner
André Gregory: Our minds are just focused on these goals and plans, which in themselves are not reality.
Wallace Shawn: No. Goals and plans are not reality. They're fantasy. They're part of a dream life. And you know, it always does seem so ridiculous, somehow, that everybody has to have his little goal in life. It's so absurd in a way. I mean, when you consider that it doesn't matter which one it is. I mean, I guess maybe it's satisfying to devote your life to trying to get money, or trying to create great works of art. I don't know. But when they're so interchangeable, somehow it seems sort of pathetic.
André: Yeah, it does.

Mario Savio
There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart that you can’t take part! You can’t even passively take part! And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus — and you’ve got to make it stop! And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it — that unless you’re free the machine will be prevented from working at all!!
