31 Days of Terror-ific Films

Halloween H20 - This is such a great late 90s horror film with a fab cast - Jamie Lee Curtis, Adam Arkin, L.L. Cool J, Michelle Williams, Josh Hartnett, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and of course, the lovely Janet Leigh. ★★★★

Joy Ride - I hadn't seen this since it first came out for rental at Blockbuster and remembered virtually nothing. Paul Walker was good and Steve Zahn was his usual terrific self. So glad I saw this available online to re-watch. ★★★

Freaky - I'd seen this either last year or earlier this year and oh my gosh was it fun. Seeing Vince Vaughn act like a teenage girl when his psychopath serial killer personality got Freaky-Fridayed into a high schooler was an out and out riot. ★★★

The Watcher in the Woods - A fave from my childhood! ★★★★

The Invisible Man - This was a good classic with the brilliant Claude Rains, but Jesus wept, Una O'Connor and her un-ending screaming made me want to take a hot poker to my ears. ★★★

Tremors - I hadn't seen this film since I lived at home and we rented it on VHS. It's ridiculous but really fun. And I've always liked Fred Ward. So handsome! ★★★

The Omen - I love the spooky flicks of the 1970s and this Gregory Peck and Lee Remick film is eerie and worth rewatching every couple years.  ★★★

The Innocents - There was a review on IMDb that perfectly described this Deborah Kerr film as "the cinematic equivalent of rising damp". (fertilecelluloid) It was beautifully shot and took up a chunk of our conversation when Wayne and I got Thai food on the 19th. ★★★

The Exorcist - An absolute masterpiece. ★★★★★

House on Haunted Hill - Meh. This film is beautifully shot in black and white and has both Vincent Price and Elisha Cook, Jr. but even still, I never really liked this film. That one girl spends the entire film screaming and running from rooms. I dunno, I guess since I saw it as a grown up, it never became a favourite. I gave it another watch, thinking I'd like it better, but that screaming broad ruins the whole film for me. ★ & ½

The Changeling - George C. Scott. Need I say more? ★★★★★

House of the Long Shadows - Pure joy for lovers of those Hammer films, featuring the Gemini triplets, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, and Christopher Lee. ★★★★★

The Wolf of Snow Hollow - I saw this on Prime and it looked interesting, but I wasn't sure. Then I saw Robert Forster was in it. Sold! And the bonus was Riki Lindhome from the Dummy episode of Pushing Daisies! The writer/director/star, Jim Cummings, was really good and it was a solid film. ★★★

The Company of Wolves - Great cast but meh. I couldn't get into it. ★★

Arachnophobia - Another one I hadn't seen since it first came out on video. I'd forgotten so much about it, except for John Goodman, who is always adorable. Super fun flick. ★★★

Death Becomes Her - Hadn't seen this film since the theatre. I wasn't terribly impressed when I was sixteen. I didn't get the obsession with staying young. Fast forward thirty-three years and I'm still baffled by people striving to look young. Being young, feeling young, I get, but constantly wanting to look young and mess with your face and body until you look completely unlike your true self is just weird. Do I wish I had my forty-year old body that looked cute in all the clothes I loved and didn't squeak and creak, not to mention all those other fun little aches and pains that I have now? Of course. But I don't mind all the little lines in my face and my grey hair. So yeah, I still am not into this film. Although Meryl Streep ate it up and was really fun. ★★

Something Wicked This Way Comes - This film was gorgeous - crisp and autumnal and chock full of great actors like Diane Ladd, Jonathan Pryce, Mary Grace Canfield (from Pollyanna!!), Pam Grier, James Stacy (from Highway to Heaven)     ------ and it was the essence of creepy, but it didn't really grab me. Maybe if I saw it as a child or was more familiar with Bradbury's story, but I'm glad I watched it. ★★ & ½

Mr. Boogedy - My whole family absolutely love this movie and all these years later it is still fabulous. The cast is outstanding with Richard Masur, Mimi Kennedy who delivers the best line in the film "Time to call a real-tor.", David Faustino (so young!), John Astin, and Kristy Swanson as the quintessential eye rolling 1980s teenager girl.

The Midnight Hour - Found this totally 80s flick on You Tube. It was kinda fun and I'm sure I would have loved it as a kid. The cast was definitely of the time - Shari Belafonte! LeVar Burton! Peter DeLuise, Kevin McCarthy, Lee Montgomery, Dedee Pfieffer, Dick Van Patten, Kurtwood Smith, and Wolfman Jack. Doubt I'll ever watch it again but it was decent.

Don't Look Now - I love the eerieness of this film. Donald Sutherland has always been a fave (so handsome!!) and Julie Christie is stunning. I liked everything but the ending. I remember watching it in high school and thinking, "What!?"

The Gate - I saw this as a grade schooler with Rachel and although it isn't the greatest horror film known to man, Stephen Dorff was adorable and it's still worth a watch. ★★★

The Crow - This came out when I was a senior in high school and I had the poster on my bedroom closet door. Knowing me, I probably still have it somewhere, along with my Glengarry Glen Ross and Depeche Mode posters. I was absolutely obsessed with the soundtrack and to this day, it is one of the best of all time. ★★★ & ½

Dracula ★★★ & ½

Poltergeist - Pretty much tied with The Changeling as my all time fave scary movie. This film has it all and I never get tired of it. I always get chills when Dana (Dominique Dunne) screams "WHAT'S HAPPENING!!??!!" ★★★★★

From Beyond the Grave - Can't be Halloween without a Peter Cushing film I've never seen! ★★

Scream - This is still such a fab teen slasher from my college days. When they killed off Drew Barrymore in the opening scene we were stunned. I'm still glad we nevr told Nana Irma about this when she was in her Skeet Ulrich phase. She would have hated seeing him as a baddie. ★★★ & ½

13 Ghosts - A classic that we watched as kids with Aunt Berne and I still love it to this day. ★★★ & ½

28 Days Later - The first time I saw this when it came out on DVD, I thought the lead guy was good but not all that great looking. Then he shaved that scraggly beard and my god, what a beautiful man. Those eyes... Cillian Murphy was so captivating and it's so nice that the rest of the world took note. ★★★★

Thriller - Okay, so this isn't really a full film, but since it's technically a short film and I was dead tired on Halloween, I'm saying it counts. I remember when Mum was in false-labor with Xavier and we stayed with a classmate's Mom whose kids had this video on. I loved it except when he morphed into the werewolf. I hid behind the recliner until Dave said it was safe to come out. ★★★★
