April 2024 Books

* Nancy Drew: The Whispering Statue by Carolyn Keene - I'm about halfway through my collection of author Mildred Wirt Benson's Nancy Drew mysteries and for a split second I felt kinda sad. Then I realised...wait a minute....I can just go back and re-read them! And I fully intend to do just that. I mean, it's only been a month since I read this and I've kind of forgotten most of it. That's the beauty of having a faulty brain that doesn't quite hold on to everything it takes in!

* Highlander Ever After by Paula Quinn - When Kayla and I were in Doylestown we popped in to a fantastic used book shop and I got this irresistible historical romance. If the cover makes me laugh and especially if it's set in Scotland, I can't say no. It was pretty good in the beginning but it's not one that I kept. I dropped it off at a Little Free Library for some other sad, silly spinster to pick up and read.

The Remake: As Time Goes By by Stephen Humphrey Bogart

¹ - audiobook
² - abridged version
* - liked
♥ - loved
Any unmarked titles were, in my opinion, so-so.

May 2024 Donations

The Colonial Theatre

HELP THE COLONIAL THEATRE BRING THAT THING YOU DO! TO THE COLONIAL THEATRE!
We’re raising $1,500 to help cover the rising costs associated with bringing 35mm titles to our nonprofit theatre. The Colonial Theatre belongs to the approximately 2% of theatres in the country that still present film on 35mm. Often times, ticket sales alone do not offset the initial investment required to offer these special film presentations to our patrons. Do you love our 35mm film programs? Do you love the Oneders? Here’s your chance to show your support.

That Thing You Do! (1996), written and directed by Tom Hanks, chronicles the meteoric rise of The Wonders, a fictional pop band from Erie, Pennsylvania. With your generous support, The Colonial Theatre is excited to bring this hilarious, heartwarming film in its original 35mm format to the 1903 Theatre!

ps - When this film came out I was at the library in my parents' county and saw that they had a bunch of film goodies that you could buy and the proceeds would go to the library. I scored, for maybe five bucks, a 45 of the title theme. I still have it!
(I also got a Barbershop brush for after I shave my hair that I still use plus a t-shirt and bag for The Truth About Cats and Dogs, which I grew out of in size and style-sense.)

BONUS (Since I forgot to donate in April.)

Tees 4 Togo

I splurged on some Rebel Girl merch this month in anticipation of Ms. Hanna's memoir.

100% of the profits from TEES 4 TOGO go to Peace Sisters a group started by Tina Kampor who has been sending money back to Dapaong, Togo for 15 years so girls in her hometown can attend school.

Each shirt costs $40, which is how much it costs to send a girl to school in Togo for one year.

The sweatshop-free shirts are collaborations between the artists and the performers who inspired them. They all donated their time and likeness to help girls in West Africa receive the educations they deserve.

Hornet Fun Run

I also donated a hundred bucks to Lucy to help raise funds for playground enhancements and social emotional learning spaces.

Lazslo, My Love

Helen Coldwell has gifted me yet another work of art. This one was so unexpected that it left me gasping for air in the parky lot, as I opened her card yesterday while walking over to Roark.

(And no post would be complete without, what else? - text messages!! Starting with one from May 14th with Kayla.)

Belated Bday Hang with Bishop

Tonight Bishop and I met up and went to Healthy Garden in Cwood for some gunga din-din. I got my Aloha salad and he ordered chickie kabobs which he was still talking about as we walked back to our cars. I loved the card he got me - it's so funny!! Boy, do I love this guy.

Grounds for Sculpture in the Rain

When Lucy heard that I was planning to spend my bday at Grounds for Sculpture she jumped at the chance and asked to go with me. As if I could ever refuse the cutest cutie patootie in the world! Not even non-stop rain could stop us. Lucy refused to use her umbrella and stated, "I don't mind if I get drenched." And she most certainly did. But rain and chill be damned, we toured the place for an hour, not missing our faves, Gloria Vanderbilt's stunning Dream Box and Lucy's giant snake. Then we were back to her place to colour using the cute Ooly markers we got at the gift shop. She even let me do a page from the Cat Butt colouring book I bought her earlier this year! All in all, it was a pretty terrific day.

Back to the DAM with Bailey!

Yesterday I picked up Miss Bailey and we were off to do some more exploring at the Delaware Art Museum. We loved seeing Lady Lilith by Dante Gabriel Rossetti again plus the kids corner which was completely different from our last visit. Going through the rooms featuring Howard Pyle's paintings was thrilling as he is absolutely one of my top five favourite artists of all time. We hope to one day go back with Lucy and introduce her to one of the coolest places ever.
