At the Wellmont Theatre

On Wednesday I met Amy at her office and we went into Montclair for dinner and then to see The English Beat and UB40 at the Wellmont. In the late 80s and early 90s we were both mad for UB40, as were my older brothers. I had a crush on lead singer Ali Campbell and Amy pined for bassist Earl Falconer. We would watch Live in Moscow on VHS on repeat and our first concert each was seeing the band. Mine was June 9th 1990 with Dave, Wayne, Wayne's sister Lynda, and her then husband Bob at the Mann Music Center. Three years later on July 30, 1993, Amy, her mother, Mum, and I saw the band at the Mann with the Gin Blossoms as an opening act. Fast forward to October 10th 2010 and it was Wayne, Xavier, Marina, Melissa and I seeing the new line-up with Duncan Campbell on lead vocals at the old Electric Factory. All I remember was watching a couple songs and then heading outside to smoke. They just weren't as good without Ali and Astro. So this time around, I wasn't super excited to see UB40 again, but I know it meant a lot to Amy and the tickets were reasonable so off we went! The English Beat was, for me, the best part of the evening. They were so good. UB40 came on, eventually, and their newest lead singer was decent, but it just wasn't the same with half the band missing. Still, Amy got her groove on and had a blast dancing to some old favourites.
