February 2020 Books

* The Bluest Eye ¹ by Toni Morrison - This was the first Toni Morrison book I'd ever read and was delighted to find that Ms. Morrison narrated so many of her novels. I can't say that I liked The Bluest Eye as it's so heartbreaking, but Toni Morrison's writing is absolutely beautiful and I plan to read the rest of her work. I desperately wanted someone to genuinely care about Pecola, the little girl who desires beauty in the form of blue eyes. Her friends love her, but it's not enough, at least for me. I wanted so badly for some adult to show her the kindness and warmth that every child needs and deserves. The Bluest Eye is completely devastating but a story that had to be written. I both love and loathe it.

* We Are SO Crashing Your Bar Mitzvah by Fiona Rosenbloom - I had first seen this book in Baldwin's Book Barn but felt it was too expensive and therefore didn't buy it. I couldn't get the hilarious title out of my mind and when I went back some time later was crestfallen to see that it was gone. So I ordered a secondhand copy online and gave it to myself as a Christmas gift. After reading The Bluest Eye, I needed to read something silly and light. This was the book to do the trick. It was just plain fun.

* My Girls ¹ by Todd Fisher - Having read both Debbie Reynolds' and Carrie Fisher's memoirs, I knew some of the stories told by Todd Fisher, but was given great insight into these two ladies.

Breaking the Surface by Greg Louganis with Eric Marcus - I'm clearly obsessed with memoirs and although twenty-five years old, Greg Louganis' story was riveting and I long for him to write another book to fill in all that he has been up to since 1995. I simply adore this fella.

A Life in Parts ¹ by Bryan Cranston - What a remarkable man. I thoroughly enjoyed learning all about his childhood, the early years of his career and all the way up to the now. Absolutely absorbing and Bryan Cranston is a fantastic narrator.

Any unmarked titles were, in my opinion, so-so.

Bridging the Distance

Since everyone is practicing social distancing I decided to start sending out some mail to friends and family. Postcards and little notes to the grown ups and for the kids in my life, I broke out my sticker collection to share and tore up some barely used Usborne colouring and activity books. I bought them over a decade ago, filled out a couple pages and then they went by the wayside. I could never bring myself to throw them out and I'm so glad, since now they are being put to good use. Hoarding can be a good thing!! I have loads of stationery that I've meant to give away but never did and now I can, hopefully, brighten up people's mailboxes with some silliness.

Here's the list of recipients (mostly I'm posting this to keep track for myself!):

FaceTime Selfie!!

Oh how I miss these three ladies. I miss sniffing Avery like a dog and making her giggle. I miss snuggling with Bailey and being silly. I really, really miss chatting with Ashlee in person and her great big hugs. This Coronavirus nonsense sucks but I'm so grateful for FaceTime so I could at least see them for a bit!

Fine and Dandy Co.

I am old school and therefore I love me some wallpaper. I came across this company's name while reading the comments of @cheapoldhouses Instagram account. Fine and Dandy Company has some absolutely exquisite wallpaper and if I had oodles and oodles of cash, I would so wallpaper every room of my dream house with their gorgeous creations. These are three of my faves:

Random Philly Pix

Isolation really kind of stinks out loud. Since I can't go visit The City of Brotherly Love any time soon, I'll have to just enjoy these photos that I took  a while back.

The Laze

The first James Bond film I saw from start to finish was On Her Majesty's Secret Service back in the mid-1990s. John Palumbo had told me that his major crush during his teen years was Diana Rigg. Never having heard of her at age nineteen, I went to B&C Video in my hometown and asked for something that starred Ms Rigg. Chris handed me the VHS copy they had and On Her Majesty's Secret Service instantly became one of my faves, mainly because of George Lazenby's performance as Bond. I've seen nearly all of the Bond movies but this one is the best (Casino Royale comes in a tight second place, though). I recently got a chance to watch the Hulu documentary Becoming Bond, which provided excellent insight into Lazenby's life before and after Bond. He's still a total dreamboat and seems like a genuinely good guy. Isn't that nice? When celebs you like turn out to be really nice? I love that.

Last Saturday with Jax

Since businesses were starting to close last week, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute cancelled the screening of Jason and the Argonauts we planned to see. Instead, I brought snacks and my DVD copy to the house and we watched it in the comforts of home. Jackson said he liked it, although he mostly played with his green army men the whole time.

Look at how freakin' grown up this kid is now!!

Mmm....waffle fries with mayo...

Selfie Saturday! It's a thing. Get into it.

I captured one of the brief moments where Jackson's attention was held.

Tim Tam Slam at Wing's

When Kay and I were at Wing's Castle I brought a bag of Tim Tams so I could teach Miss Kayla how to do the Tim Tam Slam. Nutjob that I am, I filmed it. I love at the end where she declares, "I totally get Australians."

Texts from Around the Globe

My International pals and I have been in touch and kind of making sure we are all surviving the pandemic. It's a relief to know that Barbara, Michel, and David are all healthy and doing their best to stay safe. Things in Italy are very scary and I really hope that things get better soon and that it spreads to the rest of the planet. We all need some goodness and peace of mind right about now.

Tom Papa

I finally got a chance to watch the entire Tom Papa special You're Doing Great today and it was so good, I went to Mama Rosie's (we made sure to keep our distance!) and watched it a second time with her. We were both in stitches and I know I'll be watching it again. Get thee to Netflix while it's still streaming!

Last Friday Night

Coronavirus be damned, Emily and I decided to foresake social distancing and keep our date to hang out at her new home. I got to see her two crazy-cute kids, Ana and Adam, and sat in Em's kitchen, smoking and talking until well past one in the morning. We got in some selfies with Ana (Adam fell fast asleep by the time the selfie-party began) and we fully intend to make this a regular thing. When Corona finally leaves town and vanishes from the Earth forever, never to be heard from again. And good riddance. That day can't come soon enough.

Check out Ana sporting Nana Irma's hair clip!

Grateful American

I had such a crush on Gary Sinise in high school when I saw Of Mice and Men. He's one of those actors that can play any role and I'm always blown away by his subtlety. He is just so damn good.
I was disappointed to discover that he's a Republican, but then I read that he recognises what a maniac the current president is and my love for Gary Sinise can continue. His audiobook version of his memoir is exceptional so far and I can't wait to dive back in to it tomorrow!

Mart Crowley

I heard that Mart Crowley passed away on the 7th of March. He is best known to the world for his incredible play, The Boys in the Band, as well as having been Natalie Wood's bestie. For me, though, he will always be the man that helped to create the love affair of Jonathan and Jennifer on my beloved television show, Hart to Hart. I think it was RJ who said that Mart's fingerprints were all over the back and forth banter and romantic moments for my favourite couple. For me, it's what makes the series and I'm forever grateful to this lovely human who never knew how much his words continue to make my dreary life bearable.

My New XS

Dave hooked me up with a new iPhone and last night I finally had Xavier help me transfer everything over from my 6. (Just in the nick of time since now the bloody, buggery, bullocky thing won't even turn on at all anymore. Eff you Apple and your craptastic batteries.) Today I discovered the little animal faces and had to send little notes to Ashlee and the girls. The puppy and piggy were my favourites!

The Best Trio

The IT Crowd, which I first saw back in 2014, and having it play in the background while at work has really helped me through a fairly rough week. Katherine Parkinson (from Doc Martin!!!), Richard Ayoade, and Chris O'Dowd are absolutely brilliant together as Jen, Moss, and Roy. Noel Fielding as Richmond is an added bonus in some episodes. It's non-stop silliness and primarily absurd, which is exactly what I need at the moment.

My Next Vehicle

Meet Klaus.

Saw this on Omaze and decided, what the hell, let's throw some cash at Represent Justice and maybe score a new set of wheels. (info: Represent Justice is changing the conversation around incarceration and America's justice system. Through stories of hope and redemption, they spur public demand for a fair legal system and dignity for individuals impacted by it, who are disproportionately people of color and the poor. Your donation will support the Represent Justice Fund, which was created to support and build capacity for criminal justice reform organizations, system-impacted advocates and leaders who are transforming communities across the US.) I'm not into SUVs and big vehicles but this one is really kinda cool.

Here's all the deets:

•Score one of the most iconic vehicles in existence: the 2020 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV (the taxes and shipping costs are covered!)
•Command full attention in the four-wheel drive SUV, while enjoying full peace of mind thanks to its prestigious 5-star safety rating
•Find $20,000 in the trunk to fund the insurance, plan your next road trip or use however you want!
