Urban Justice Center
The end of June I got an email from Airbnb stating the following:
The US Supreme Court decided to uphold the travel ban. We are profoundly disappointed by the Court's decision. The travel ban is a policy that goes against our mission and values — to restrict travel based on a person's nationality or religion is wrong.
And while this news is a setback, we will continue the fight with organizations that are helping those impacted. Airbnb will be matching donations to the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) up to a total of $150,000 through September 30, 2018 to support their work advocating for systemic change and legal pathways for those affected by the travel ban. If you’d like to join us, you can donate here.
So once July's first paycheck was in my account I clicked here and tossed some cash their way. It just makes me feel good to make even the slightest effort towards helping a good cause. Here's a lil' more about IRAP:
International Refugee Assistance Project: IRAP is a project of the Urban Justice Center. IRAP organizes law students and lawyers to develop and enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons. Mobilizing direct legal aid, litigation, and systemic advocacy, IRAP serves the world’s most persecuted individuals and empowers the next generation of human rights leaders.
IRAP mobilized an emergency taskforce of legal advocates and volunteers at airports across the United States to defend the rights of incoming refugees and immigrants in the wake of the January 27, 2017 Executive Order. Since then, IRAP has been leading the fight in the courts and the press to protect the legal and human rights of displaced persons around the globe. For more information, visit refugeerights.org.
Special Olympics
Here's some info on the Special Olympics, for those of you who aren't aware of how awesome it is!
Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment -- on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential.
Special Olympics is the leading voice in raising awareness about the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities.
Through sports, we showcase the skills and dignity of our athletes. We also bring together communities to see and take part in the transformative power of sports. We know the odds our athletes must overcome and the barriers they face every single day. We see this at training events and competitions as our athletes push to beat their personal bests -- and exceed them. Their stories and successes inspire us all.
We believe in a world where there are millions of different abilities but not disabilities. And we're spreading this message everywhere - at big Special Olympics events and small ones.
Habitat for Humanity
I guess I started donating to Habitat when I discovered their ReStores a handful of years ago. But here's what they are really all about:
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Habitat works toward our vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
Please join me in the Low Budget Philanthropy movement and help out your community and beyond in the simplest way - donating any amount to whatever charity or organisation that you care about!
