Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman has always seemed like just a truly great guy. The kind you'd like to hang out with and share a few laughs. I've admired his work over the years and he consistently delivers exceptional performances. But my true admiration for him came when I saw an interview for the anniversary edition of Tootsie. He was so endearing when he spoke of his interactions with men when he was in character as Dorothy Michaels. He spoke of how, because Dorothy is not conventionally a beautiful woman, that men would dismiss him. It was as if they "turned a venetian blind" and he did not exist. That because Dorothy was not appealing to look at, that these men had no desire to speak to her at all. He remarked at how awful it was to be treated like that. "To be erased."

I had also read an interview where he wondered how many interesting women in his life he had met and missed out on having a good conversation with because he ignored them based on his perception of their beauty or lack thereof. I found it so fascinating that he had this experience and could understand how horribly people will treat those who are, by society's standards, unattractive, and thus changed the way he thought of and treated women. What a mench. I heart Dustin Hoffman!

15 December 2017 - current feelings on DH? Disappointed. Just totally disappointed and feeling a fool for having believed him to be something that few men truly are: great. Thankful that I can still be proud of Adam Horovitz, Tom Hanks, and lovely Hugh Jackman.
